In his book The Champion's Mind, Jim Afremow illustrates that "physical ability alone rarely translates into superior athletic performance." The secret of top athletes in great performances is their mind. Mental abilities like confidence, concentration, and composure -- when combined with athleticism-- are powerful weapons in the pool. Thankfully a swimmer can train her mind like she can her body.
Yoga incorporates mental training from several angles: teaching meditation and mindfulness, instructing visualization, practicing distraction elimination, and promoting positive thinking. By focusing on the breath and the body during yoga practice, a swimmer learns to be present and mindful during difficult moments, using their minds to guide their performance.
Improving the quality of the swimmer's mind positively impacts her training in the water.
